The Pantages Theater

The arts have always been important to my family. One of my favorite memories was getting to attend the play Wicked when the cast with Eden Espinosa was touring at the Pantages theater. As you approach the theater it only seems to grow more and more massive. The architectural style takes you back to a time when theaters almost always were places for plays and operas, not movies. When I went, my aunt and I put our names in the raffle to win front row tickets for the price of $2. Luckily we were able to see it in the front row. As spectacular as the exterior of the building is, the interior of the Pantages is absolutely stunning. Rows upon rows of bright red velvet seats sit in two tears underneath a spectacularly carved ceiling with a bright crystal chandelier in the center, like a warm bright sun. The walls are filled with detailed architectural work and hold the boxes for the privileged few who get to watch like kings and queens. All of this faces towards a magnificently displayed stage that rivals the level or art that is played on it. Often times the stage is altered to fit the needs of the production. For example, when I went to see wicked, they mounted a great mechanical dragon over the stage to be used in one of the scenes. Going to the Pantages theater was a fantastic experience. In my mind the art and architecture of the theater rivals those of the famous theaters on Broadway and will be a treasure of theater for generations to come.
