The Gateway Arch

gateway arch elevator design

The Gateway Arch is located in St. Louis, Missouri and its design is very unique contribution to the history of the United States. The building has the title of being the largest monument built in the Western Hemisphere and was dedicated to the idea of westward expansion. This structure is taller than any other building in Missouri, and is also accessible to tourists for a fantastic view. The transportation of tourists relies on an elevator system that is unique to its kind. Each compartment travels on a system where the cart first moves to the side and then up. This accommodates for the curve of the arch and allows tourists to participate in viewing surrounding areas at the height of the arch. The view from the arch is possible due to slated windows located on each side of the arch, at the top of the curve. This structure was built in 1965 and a common fear was shared that each side of the arch, during construction, would not connect in the middle. However, this proved to be false since the Arch was completed, and design of the building is layered steel triangles welded and superimposed on top of the last one.

I visited and toured the arch when I was younger, and the thing I remember most was the viewing section of it. To be able to view the outside, one had to lean on cushions located on each side of wall, propping oneself to lean forward almost over the window. This act was terrifying to me because it felt to me like I would fall right out of the window. The elevator ride was also entertaining due to the movement of the cart. What made the ride interesting was the swinging of the cart as it moved from side to side and up the arch.
