Gould Hall, University of Oklahoma

Gould

This building is where I started my college-as-a-career at the University of Oklahoma. Just kidding…I shall graduate soon, I think, although sadly not with an architecture degree. But, I’m not joking when I talk about Gould Hall. If your studies are based out of this building, then you know as well as I do that you are a hard-core student. You probably don’t sleep much. You spend a lot of time working in the studio. You spend a lot of time in front of a computer. You spend a lot of money on coffee. You build a tolerance for coffee. Eventually nothing can keep you awake and you start to have abnormal heart palpitations that make you think you’re going to die. Okay, that’s a bit extreme. But seriously, respect the kids in Gould Hall. If you have a friend there, bring them some chow and a coffee. A bit about the building itself—you may get a lot of exercise in the building, because it’s huge. Also, you might have to walk from one “wing” to the other to print your stuff, then drag yourself up the stairs from the “basement” to the third floor to use a paper slicer or something. The building consists of four levels. On some levels you can walk from one end all the way to the other, but on others you can’t. You might be so tired that you forget which level you’re on and you forget which levels go all the way around, and which ones don’t, resulting in more exercise. For some reason I never used the elevators, despite my exhaustion. One day I was so tired that I tripped in the stairwell. Luckily I face-planted onto my friend’s bum—thanks Heather Rae for giving me a soft place to land. I can’t end this without mentioning the giant window lined studios. The view was lovely and light streamed in.
