The Cotton Bowl

The Cotton bowl stadium one of Dallas, TX most notable landmarks. The stadium was built in 1930 and official got its name in 1936. Many pro-athlete, collegiate, and high school teams have played in this stadium. The stadium has even been used to host a few of the World Cup games.

Today if you ask someone from Dallas about the Cotton Bowl they will tell you it’s synonymous with the State Fair of Texas and the TX/OU Red River rivalry. Growing up we attended the state fair every year and I would stare at the Cotton Bowl in awe.

The first football game I got to watch in the Cotton Bowl was also the first time I got to attend an OU game. It was an amazing experience getting to watch OU beat Texas live! Then I walked into the state fair to celebrate/ eat as much fried food as possible. I promise you can never go wrong with a deep fried snicker and some ice cream.

Darul Aman Palace (The King’s Palace)/Russian Officer Club

The Darul Aman Palace is also known as the “King’s Palace” was built in the 1920’s by King Amanullah Khan. King Amanullah built the place to help modernize Kabul, Afghanistan. The palace was supposed to become the center of Afghanistan’s new capital.  The palace was built by a group of Europeans architects using the neoclassical style.

I couldn’t find too much information on the Russian Officer club but it was built by the Soviets when they occupied Kabul in the late 1970’s. The officers club was built on top of a large mountain and it overlooks the King’s palace.  I’m unsure what style the building is but it has three stories inside. The kitchen/pantry is on the bottom, the middle floor was used as a lounge area, and the top floor had beds.

Last time I saw the buildings they were both in ruin but I know there have been plans to restore both buildings. I hope they are able to restore both of these beautiful buildings.
