Headington Hall

Located on the intersection of Jenkins and Lindsey Headington Hall is quite the structure.  It was one of the six resident halls on OU’s campus, and is by far the nicest.  Headington houses 380 students both student-athletes and non-athlete students, but every scholarship athlete is required to live her their freshmen year.  It offers 4 styles of rooms: 2 Bedroom/2 Bathroom, 4 Bedroom/2 Bathroom, 2 Bedroom/1 Bathroom, 2 Bedroom/2 Bathroom.  Each room comes furnished, and Headington has its own dining hall inside the building.

The construction of Headington was a $75 million project.  It was made with the hope of it attracting recruits.  Both Sam Bradford and Adrian Peterson were substantial donors in helping fund the project. The building was opened in 2013, and has lived up to expectations.  I was lucky to have lived here for a year, and although I like living off campus more, I still miss how nice it was and its convenience.

Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium

The University of Oklahoma’s football program has been a national powerhouse for its entire existence.  People from all over the country gather on Saturday nights at the Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to watch the Sooners play.  The stadium is home to Sooner football team, but it is also ‘home’ to its fans. Oklahoma Memorial Stadium was constructed in 1923. At this time, it only had seating down the west sideline, but now the stadium is bowl shaped with its long axis and football field  running north/south. The stadium has many different names and nicknames like Owen Field or The Palace on the Prairie, but Memorial Stadium is it official name. The name was chose to honor the students that died in World War I. Owen Field is an acceptable name for the stadium, but it really is the name of just the field. The stadium and field both have their own names.

By 1999, the 75 year old stadium desperately needed some structural improvements.  At that point, only the Press Box was relatively new.  It had been installed in 1975.  The Sooners won the National Championship in 2000 which led to an increase in the number of freshmen applicants. The increase help fund a stadium renovation which saw every single seat in the stadium being replaced, and the scoreboard being redone in 2002.  In 2004 the audio and visual systems were replaced, and scoreboard screens were placed at both end zones.  The latest renovation occurred this Spring where the bowl shape was finally completed.  The highest attended game was this season where 87,939 fans watched the Sooners play the Ohio State Buckeyes.
