St. Mary’s Catholic Church

While most of Eameses career was focused on the house case study, their architectural legacy also includes several churches throughout the southern United States.  St. Mary’s Catholic Church located in West Helena, Arkansas in one of the Eameses first church designs.  This church was built in 1934, making it one of the Eameses earlier buildings.  When it was designed Renaissance Revival architecture was extremely popular however, Eames decided to a modern reinterpretation of Romanesque architecture.  This allowed to church to be built within the budget while maintaining the traditional style.  The inside of the church has beautiful woodwork that highlights the vaulted ceiling.
