The Florence Cathedral was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and named in honor of Santa Maria del Flore. This massive Gothic structure started construction in 1296 and finished in 1436. This giant church was symbolic of the power and faith of Florence at the time.
The first amazing building I saw in Italy when I studied abroad this past summer was the Florence Cathedral. The first time I saw this beautiful piece architecture my jaw dropped. I could not believe the amount of detail that had been put into a single building. Although this was just the first of many amazing sights I saw in Italy, I know that it has impacted me with the size and meticulous detail.
